Quick Reference

A natural spring of flowing water, as opposed to a well or a cistern. Fountains are numerous in upper Galilee. They offer security (Isa. 41: 17–18) and are pictured as among the blessings in the eschatological future (Ezek. 47: 1–12). Jeremiah (2: 13) describes Yahweh as the fountain of living waters—which is what Jesus promises to be able to give the woman of Samaria (John. 4: 10).
