Illinois-born author, reared in South Carolina, the setting for his stories collected in Southern Fried (1962) and Southern Fried Plus Six (1968) and his novel Moonshine Light, Moonshine Bright (1967), the salty tale of two teenaged boys involved in a variety of skulduggery. Ruby Red (1971), another novel, whose setting is extended to Nashville, presents the seamy life of girls trying to get into country-singer show business.
