Australian Liberal statesman, Prime Minister (1975–83). He became the youngest-ever Australian MP in 1955 and was minister for the army, education and science, and defence before becoming leader of the Liberal Party in 1975. He was appointed Prime Minister with the dissolution of the previous administration by the Governor-General and was elected a month later. Unable to curb unemployment, his government was defeated in 1983.
