Quick Reference

A weight, such as a dumb-bell or barbell, not attached to a specialized weight machine. Free weights allow the exerciser to move in any direction and provide a great variety of routines. However, they do not isolate individual muscle actions as effectively as weight-training machines, and the resistance remains constant throughout the range of movement of the muscle being exercised.
