Quick Reference

Chilean statesman, President of Chile (1964–70). The programmes he initiated, including agrarian reform and the ‘Chileanization’ of the copper industry (whose controlling interest had until then been held by US companies), were ambitious, but his failure to check inflation or to redistribute wealth turned many of his supporters against him. His son, Edúardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, was also President of Chile (1994–2000).
