President of Chile 1994–2000 Eldest son of President E. Frei, he studied engineering and in 1988 sold the shares of his business to turn to politics. Elected Senator in 1989, he became chairman of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) in 1991 and was elected President on 11 December 1993 with 58 per cent of the vote. Officially President from 11 March 1994, he sought to stabilize the country's fragile democracy without upsetting the powerful military, still led by Pinochet. His appointment as Senator for life in 2000 gave the ruling centre left coalition a majority in the Senate.
