Quick Reference

(1964–75)

A war fought between Mozambique nationalist groups united into the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and Portuguese troops. The Portuguese failed to contain the conflict, and by 1968 Samora Machel claimed one-fifth of the country. Brutal Portuguese counter-terrorism made conciliation even more impossible and Portugal conceded independence in 1974. Frelimo became the dominant political force in the new People's Republic of Mozambique.
