Protestant martyr. A junior canon of ‘Cardinal College’ (Christ Church), Oxford, he was imprisoned for heresy in 1528 but escaped to the Continent, where he assisted W. Tyndale. On his return in 1532 he was arrested and condemned to death for denying that purgatory and transubstantiation were necessary dogmas.
