A group of adult-onset behavioural disturbances that progress to frontal lobe dementia, parkinsonism, and amyotrophy in variable proportions. They can be caused by mutation in the gene for tau or presenilin-1 (see Pick's disease). Ubiquitin-positive frontotemporal dementia is caused by mutation in the gene for progranulin. Other loci have also been identified.
