(b. 26 Mar. 1868, d. 28 Apr. 1936).
King of Egypt 1923–36 Younger son of Khedive Ismail (b. 1830, d. 1895), who had sold the Egyptian Suez Canal shares to Britain in 1875. He was chosen by the British to become Sultan of Egypt in 1917 owing to his friendly views towards the British Empire. As King under the new constitutional monarchy from 1923 he tried to pursue an autocratic government and was locked in constant battle with the Wafd party, though he also resented constraints imposed upon him by the British.
