Austrian painter and graphic artist, born in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Gütersloh, 1946–50, and is the best-known member of the school of Fantastic Realism made up mainly of Gütersloh's pupils. His subjects are drawn from religion and magic, treated in a outlandish and vividly detailed manner—often his imagery is close to that of horror comics. He is a prolific etcher as well as a painter. There is a museum of his work in Vienna in a villa designed in 1889 by Otto Wagner. In 1993 he had a major exhibition at the Russian Museum, St Petersburg.
