(1878–1966). One of the most important military thinkers of the 20th century, J. F. C. ‘Boney’ Fuller was educated at Malvern College and the Royal Military College Sandhurst, and was commissioned into the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in 1898. He served in the Second Boer War, and in 1903 was posted to India, where he was able to indulge a passion for mysticism and the occult. In 1906 he married Margaretha Karnatz, known as Sonia. In the same year he befriended the occultist Aleister Crowley, and later helped him edit an occult review, the Equinox. They quarrelled in 1911 and the friendship was not renewed.
