functional model of leadership

Quick Reference

A leadership theory that proposes that it is difficult for a single leader to display both high levels of task and relationship behaviour at the same time. Therefore, a single coach cannot satisfy the needs of all athletes, and might require the assistance of other coaches to complement his or her behaviour. For example, if a head coach is very task-orientated, an athlete-orientated assistant coach might be selected to complement the head coach's behaviour.
