Reasonable funeral expenses (including the cost of a tomb or gravestone) are a first charge on the assets of the deceased, payable out of the estate before any other debt or duty (Stanton v Ewart F. Youlden Ltd [1960] 1 WLR 543). Such expenses are deductible in calculating inheritance tax (Inheritance Tax Act 1984 s 173).
