A serine endopeptidase (EC 188.8.131.52, 794 aa, a kexin) that processes various secretory proproteins (including some growth factors) by cleavage at paired basic amino acids. Will cleave the HIV envelope glycoprotein (gp160) into two portions, gp120 and gp41, making the virus fusion-competent. It is inhibited by serpin B8. See notch.
