Sing. farq. Discrepancies, differences. A field of jurisprudence according to which the reasons for disagreements and differences in legal opinions are analyzed and evaluated. The independent legal thinker (mujtahid) looks for the fine discrepancy that another may have overlooked when applying qiyas (legal reasoning by analogy or syllogism) to discover a rule. If a structural difference (farq) exists, the qiyas is held faulty. The sum of these discrepancies is furuq.
