Quick Reference

A spindle-shaped muscle, such as the biceps brachii, with an expanded belly. The muscle fibres are arranged more or less parallel to each other and the long axis of the muscle. This strap-like arrangement provides the greatest degree of shortening and enables the muscle to produce a large range of motion quickly, but it is not a very powerful type of muscle. Compare pennate muscle.
