Established under the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act to take over responsibility for the funding and inspection of further education colleges from local authorities. Colleges and other training organizations in the skills sector were required to submit bids to the FEFC for the funding of vocationally related courses. Although some adult education remained under the financial control of the local authorities, the FEFC managed funding for all other provision in the sector, and specifically that related to vocational education and training. It operated its own inspectorate, responsible for carrying out full inspections of further education colleges. In 2001 the Learning and Skills Council took over many of the responsibilities of the FEFC, and the inspection of non‐adult provision became part of the remit of Ofsted.
