French architect. The father of Ange-Jacques Gabriel, he assisted Hardouin-Mansart and succeeded de Cotte as Premier Architecte (1734) and Director of the Academy (1735). He designed several hôtels in Paris (including the Hôtel Peyrenne de Moras—now Musée Rodin), the Place d'Armes in Rennes, and the Place Royale, Bordeaux (from 1728), which is probably one of his finest achievements.
