(Strauss: Daphne). Cont. (or mez.). Wife of Peneios and mother of Daphne. She overhears Daphne telling Leukippos, her friend from childhood, that she is not interested in his passionate declarations. Gaea tells her daughter that one day she will recognize real love. Duet (with Daphne): Daphne! Mutter! (‘Daphne! Mother!’). Some well‐known singers have sung this short but rewarding role, including Jean Madeira and Marjana Lipovšek. Created (1938) by Helene Jung (who was also the first Mussel in Die ägyptische Helena and created the Housekeeper in Die schweigsame Frau).
