Study of the components of a stride of a person walking or running. Gait is an important sign of health and disease. A person walking with toes turned out at right angles may be suffering from flat feet, or the gait may be due to stiffness (following disease of the knee-joint, for example). Gait analysis of an athlete can help a coach or sports physician understand the relationship between the athlete's capabilities or impairments and the gait pattern, so as to enhance performance and reduce the risk of a sports injury.
