Quick Reference

A favourite subject of paintings—the depiction of Viṣṇu saving an elephant from a crocodile. In a previous life the elephant had been a royal devotee of the god, but had been cursed by a sage to be reborn as an elephant. His devotion (bhakti) to Viṣṇu saves him and ensures his return to human form.
