Egyptian shaykh of al-Azhar who issued a fatwa declaring female circumcision (clitoridectomy) part of the legal body of Islam and a laudable practice that honors women. The fatwa was issued in response to a public declaration by Egyptian muftis that clitoridectomies are not stipulated by the Quran and that hadith attributing the practice to Muhammad are unreliable.
