(b Tabriz, Iran, 1903; d NY, 1981). Amer. violinist and teacher(of Armenian parentage). Paris début 1924. Taught at Russ. Cons., Paris, 1925–39 and at École Normale de Musique 1936–9. Settled in NY 1939. Joined faculty of Curtis Inst. 1944, and Juilliard Sch. of Mus. 1946. Outstanding teacher whose pupils incl. Itzhak Perlman, Michael Rabin, Kyung-Wha Chung, Miriam Fried, Pinchas Zukerman, and Jaime Laredo. Wrote 2 books on vn. playing and technique.
