Quick Reference

Glasgow.

Museum of modern art (initially devoted to the work of living artists), opened in 1996 following a decision by Glasgow District Council in 1991 to provide a fund of £3 million for buying contemporary works. It is housed in the former Royal Exchange, a handsome 18th-century building in Queen Street in the centre of the city. The collection is particularly strong in works by Scottish artists, but it is international in scope, including work by Niki de Saint Phalle, for example. It covers graphic art and photography as well as painting and sculpture.
