Quick Reference

A genus of Gram-negative bacteria which is not assigned to any taxonomic family. The cells are ovoid or kidney-shaped and produce fibrous ‘stalks’ which commonly contain ferric hydroxide. They appear to derive energy from the oxidation of ferrous (to ferric) iron. They are micro-aerophilic, and are found in cool, iron-containing natural waters, and in soil.
