Quick Reference

(1956– ),

Scottish novelist and short story writer, born in Ayrshire. Her first novel, The Trick is to Keep Breathing (1990), a typographically experimental and psychologically intense story of mental breakdown, was followed by Blood (1991), a collection of short stories which combine sharp observations of daily life with a sense of the imminent uncanny. Later works, which include Foreign Parts (1994, novel) and Where You Find It (1996, interlinked short stories), continue to explore with sharp immediacy inner states, sexual obsessions, and contemporary mores. Clara (2002) is a novel about Clara Schumann.
