A Web site which hosts a number of computer-based games. These games may be online versions of the single-user computer games that are normally supplied on CDs or may be electronic versions of conventional, multiplayer games such as bridge or chess where a server mediates a game between a number of players. Often the larger game sites provide chat rooms and online forums which enable game players to communicate with each other about their interests. The sites make money in a variety of ways: by taking a proportion of the phone charges, by charging a flat-rate subscription fee, or by charging a per-game fee. Many sites offer free games as an inducement to sample games for which a charge is made.
