A substance that is claimed to release growth hormone and act as an anabolic agent. It has been used in the USA by body builders. Harmful side-effects include nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, and seizures. When combined with alcohol or sedatives, it can adversely affect breathing, with potentially lethal consequences. In 1990, it was associated with at least 57 cases of poisoning, and the Food and Drug Administration advised that it should be used only under experimental protocols for narcolepsy and is otherwise unsafe. Despite this advice, body builders still continued to use GHB.
