Quick Reference

In the Mahābhārata the wife of the blind Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the mother of the Kauravas, who wears a blindfold out of sympathy for her husband. Mourning the death of her children at the end of the war, she curses Kṛṣṇa for having failed to prevent the slaughter, predicting the end of the Vṛṣṇis and his own death. Kṛṣṇa, for his part, blames Gāndhārī, who, as Duryodhana's mother, can be considered responsible for the conflict. Fifteen years later, she retires with Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Kuntī to practise asceticism in the forest, where they subsequently die in a fire. Later, her curse on the Vṛṣṇis and Kṛṣṇa is seen to take effect. See also Mahābhārata.
