Indian politician Born in Orbassano, Italy, she became an interpreter. In 1968, she married Indira Gandhi's son, Rajiv Gandhi, and moved to India. She moved into public life when her husband became Prime Minister, in 1984. Following his assassination in 1991, she faced calls to head the Indian National Congress, despite her Italian descent. Party leader from 1998, her inexperience became a liability to the party, which lost the 1999 elections. In 2004, however, she led the Congress to a surprise victory. Although not Prime Minister because of her Italian descent, she occupied a pivotal position in Indian politics owing to her control of her party's agenda.
