Quick Reference

A popular tīrtha in Uttarakhand (formerly in Uttar Pradesh) in the high Himālaya(s), marking the point where the celestial Gaṅgā is thought to have come to earth, and close to the glacier from which the actual river emerges. In the accessible summer months, the goddess Gaṅgā is worshipped there in a shrine built in the 18th century on the banks of the Bhāgīrathī (the name of the river at this point in its course).
