A nerve pathway by which the central nervous system controls muscle actions. It carries nerve impulses from the motor cortex, which stimulate gamma motor neurones in a muscle, causing muscle spindles to be stretched. Sensory impulses are sent from the spindles to the alpha motor neurones. causing the muscle to contract. The sensory impulses also convey information to the CNS about the state of the muscle. This information is needed for the execution of smooth coordinated voluntary movements. See also stretch reflex.
