US astronaut. One of his two space shuttle flights was the Columbia mission in December 1990 that carried three ultraviolet telescopes and an X-ray telescope. Gardner was selected as an astronaut in 1980, worked at NASA's headquarters in Washington, DC, from 1992, and left NASA in 1995.
