(1827–79) Union army officer, born in Fairfield, Kentucky. Garrad was commander of a New York volunteer infantry regiment in the Army of the Potomac who participated in the campaigns of Fredericksburg (1862) and Chancellorsville (1863). Garrard distinguished himself as a brigade commander at Gettysburg (1863) and Nashville (1864), but was less successful in an intervening assignment as a cavalry commander in the Army of the Cumberland at Chattanooga (1863).
