cardinal from 1914. He was elected Prior of Downside in 1878. In 1896 he went to Rome, where he was a member of the Commission on Anglican Ordinations. He took part in the election of Benedict XV (1914), countering anti-British propaganda. His writings, though often inaccurate, increased knowledge of English monasticism.
