Quick Reference

(suborder Apocrita, superfamily Evanioidea)

Family of parasitic wasps which are very similar to the Ichneumonidae but have the head set on a slender neck and the abdomen set high above the hind coxae. The adults are thin, black, and 13–20 mm long, with short antennae and ovipositors often as long as the body. The larvae are parasitic on solitary bees and wasps nesting in wood, rotten logs, or in the ground. Adults are fairly common and usually found on flowers.
