A condition in which the stomach contents reflux into the oesophagus because of permanent or intermittent impairment of the usual mechanisms preventing this. It may give rise to oesophagitis. Patients may present not just with heartburn but also with asthma or nocturnal cough and chronic throat symptoms. In severe cases there may be tooth erosion.
