American general, born in England. He fought under General Braddock and Baron Amherst in the French and Indian wars but thereafter supported the American cause in the War of Independence. His victory at Saratoga (1777) led the Conway Cabal of New England officers to plot for him to replace George Washington. His rout at Camden (1780) ended his military career, though he later served under Washington.
