Quick Reference

A computer which acts as a router on the Internet. It processes datagrams flowing through the network, determines which subnetwork they are destined for and sends them on to their destination. If the destination is a subnetwork connected to the gateway then it sends the data to that network. A gateway can also convert from one protocol to another: say from TCP-IP to a proprietary protocol used by a subnetwork.
