n. a method for acquiring images during specific parts of a fast-moving cycle, in particular the phases of contraction and relaxation of the heart, so that the appearance of the organ in each phase can be studied in isolation. The imaging is usually correlated with a physiological measure, such as an ECG trace. Gating is used in CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine.
