Best known for his standard manual, A New Introduction to Bibliography (1972), intended to replace McKerrow’s Introduction. His other publications include bibliographies of William Mason (1951) and of the Foulis Press (1964; 2e, 1986), From Writer to Reader (1978), and Trinity College: The First 150 Years (1980), the subject of his Sandars lectures. Gaskell was librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge from 1967 until 1986.
