In Judaism and the New Testament, hell. The name comes via ecclesiastical Latin from Greek geenna, from Hebrew gē' hinnōm ‘hell’, literally ‘valley of Hinnom’, a place near Jerusalem where children were sacrificed to Baal, as in Jeremiah 19:6.
