‘the German Savonarola’. He held teaching posts at Freiburg and Basle, but his reforming interests led him to abandon academic work. From 1478 he held the office of cathedral preacher at Strasbourg. Despite his austere moral ideals and his denunciation of the vices of all classes, he won and held his hearers. He demanded reform but never seems to have contemplated leaving the Church.
