Quick Reference

Actin-binding protein (brevin, actin depolymerizing factor, 782 aa) that nucleates actin polymerization and severs microfilaments at sub-micromolar calcium concentrations. A variant with an additional N-terminal 23 aa is found in plasma and probably clears actin from the circulation. The amyloid protein in the Finnish type of hereditary amyloidosis is a fragment of gelsolin with a single mutated amino acid.
