Minerals (usually of crystallized matter) used for decorating items such as textiles and liturgical objects or for personal adornment. The most highly prized are the precious stones, diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires; less value is attached to semi-precious stones such as garnets, opals, topazes, and tourmalines. The organic gems are amber, coral, ivory, and jet.
