One of two small thigh muscles, the gemellus superior and gemellus inferior, which have a common insertion on the greater trochanter of the femur. The origin of the gemellus superior is on the ischial spine and that of the gemellus inferior on the ischial tuberosity. The primary action of the muscles is lateral (outward) rotation of the femur.
