A small family of marine, coastal to oceanic fish that have a very elongate, sometimes ribbon-like body, a large mouth provided with strong teeth, and long, low first dorsal and short second dorsal fins. Secondary small finlets may occur anterior to the forked tail fin. Several species are of commercial importance. There are about 20 species, found in tropical to temperate waters, world-wide.
