The earnings difference between men and women. It is normally measured by comparing male and female average hourly earnings, though average weekly and average lifetime earnings are also used. Currently, in the UK, the average hourly rate of women's pay is about 82 per cent of average male pay. Importantly, evidence of a gender pay-gap remains if one controls for education, experience, and other measures of human capital. [See equal pay.]
