The first DNA unwinding protein (q.v.), to be isolated. It is the product of gene 32 of phage T4 and is essential for its replication. The protein has a molecular weight of 35,000 daltons and binds to a stretch of DNA about 10 nucleotides long. See Chronology, 1970, Alberts and Frey.
